Let's Chat!
I want to start by saying : Food is your friend.
And just like friends, the wrong ones get you into trouble while good friends support you and have your back.... Food works the same way.
Some foods are fun for a minute… then leave you tired, bloated, inflamed, or reaching for snacks an hour later. Other foods don’t make a big scene, they uplift you while quietly supporting your energy, digestion, mood, and focus.
Its Important to Keep a Healthy Relationship with our Food
Most of us were never taught how to eat in a way that feels good and supports the body. So food turns into rules. Rules turn into guilt. And guilt makes eating way more complicated than it needs to be.
At Root + Mei, we see food as an opportunity ... not punishment
Eating Well Isn’t About Being “Good”
Somewhere along the way, healthy eating got confused with boring eating.
Plain • Dry • Bland
Meals you survive with a sigh instead of enjoy with a smile.
That’s not sustainable and honestly, it’s not how real people eat long-term.
Eating healthy is an opportunity to bring flavor, flair, and personality into your meals while still supporting your body. When food tastes good and feels good afterward, consistency stops feeling like discipline and starts feeling like a natural part of your day.
The Foods That Actually Have Your Back
The foods that tend to support the body most consistently are pretty simple:
- Lean proteins
- Fiber-rich foods
- Non-starchy vegetables
- Healthy Fats
These foods help keep blood sugar steadier, digestion happier, and energy more even keel. Over time, they reduce stress and systemic inflammation on the ever important trio... the Pancreas, Gut, and Liver.
Things like type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, fatigue, or metabolic imbalance usually do not show up out of thin air. There are often signs the body has been compensating for a while.
Turning Flavor into A Way of Life
It’s about choosing food that works with your body instead of constantly asking it to do more.
Healthy food only feels restrictive when flavor is missing. When you add Flavor, it will help you to keep making healthier choices which in turn becomes a way of life.
Most people try to eat “healthy” by eating plain and that’s where things start falling apart. Flavor is what makes food satisfying. It’s what keeps you coming back without feeling deprived.
- Simple sauces
- Olive oil drizzles
- Fresh herbs
- Seasonings that actually taste good
- Marinades, rubs, and bastes

🫒 Use non-starchy vegetables as a flavor base, not just as a side dish.
Roasted Veggie Flavor ... Sofrito-Style
This is one of my go-to ways to turn a regular meal into a tasty dish :
Ingredients
1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
1 tomato
1/2 minced onion
2–3 cloves garlic, minced
1 small chile or pinch red pepper flakes
¼ cup fresh parsley (or cilantro), finely chopped
3–4 tablespoons olive oil
Seasonings to taste ( use fresh herbs when you can)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Spread pepper, garlic, and chile on a baking sheet.
Roast 15–20 minutes until soft and fragrant.
Mix with parsley, olive oil, and salt.
How to use it
- Smear on chicken before cooking
- Spoon over fish or roasted vegetables
- Add to bowls or plates as a finishing touch
This is a sofrito-style vegetable paste used across Mediterranean and Latin cuisines that is healthy, simple, inexpensive and has a lot of Flair.
Thoughtful Finish
You don’t need a diagnosis to start eating in a way that is healthy. Everyone benefits from choosing foods that that keeps their systems healthy. When your relationship with food shifts from restriction to support, eating well stops feeling hard and becomes a natural part of who you are.
